For almost a year, organizations serving people with developmental disabilities in New York State have been advocating for increased State funding to be put toward a wage increase for Direct Support Professionals – those employees who care for and support people with developmental disabilities at organizations like The Resource Center. The advocacy campaign is called #bFair2DirectCare, and it urges Governor Andrew Cuomo to include $45 million in new funding for DSP wages.
Although a number of State lawmakers have indicated they support the $45 million, the Governor did not include the funding in his proposed 2017-18 Budget for New York State. Organizers of the #bFair2DirectCare campaign are asking people to contact the Governor this week to try to get him to change his mind.
The Governor and his staff are well aware of the #bFair2DirectCare $45 million request. They have seen all of the #bFair2DirectCare rallies, media stories, visits to his top staff, letters to the editor and the Times Union editorial. Now is the time to remind the Governor why this issue is so important.

Everyone is urged to call or write the Governor this week and tell him to “BFair2DirectCare” and include $45 million in new State funds in the Governor’s 30-day Budget amendments as a first step toward a living wage for direct support workers serving people with developmental disabilities.
Call and say, “I am calling on behalf of the #bFair2DirectCare Campaign for a living wage. Governor Cuomo must provide $45 million in his budget amendments. Funding is critical to the health, safety and well-being of people with developmental disabilities and it’s the right thing to do for the people who work tirelessly caring for them.”
People also should call their Senator and Assemblymember and urge them to call the Governor and tell him to “bFair2DirectCare” and provide the $45 million.

It is especially important that the Governor hear from Direct Support Professionals and other workers who support people with developmental disabilities.
