TRC’s Parent Support Groups welcome new members
The Resource Center offers monthly support groups for family members and caregivers of people with special needs.
The group, called Parents for Parents, meets in Dunkirk and Jamestown. The Jamestown group meets the first Wednesday of the month at TRC’s Administrative Offices, 200 Dunham Avenue. The Dunkirk session is held the second Monday of the month at TRC’s Gateways building, 51 East Third Street. Both meetings are held from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
Parents for Parents connects and supports families and caregivers of individuals with special needs. The group offers support, information, speakers and presentations on a variety of topics. This is an opportunity for parents and caregivers to come together to discuss common triumphs, challenges, issues and concerns.
The Resource Center will host Dan Keefe, RN and Supervising Public Health Nurse for Chautauqua County Health Department. Dan will present information on lead poisoning. In addition to the lead poisoning talk; Dan will speak on the importance of immunization and some of the controversy surrounding immunizations.
Did you know that lead is a natural metal found in our earth and in our older home’s house paints? Lead is a poison and can have significant effects on the nervous system causing learning disabilities, speech and hearing disorders, behavioral problems and lowered IQ in children. Dust from lead paint is still the number one source of childhood lead poisoning. Come and learn more about these timely topics!
Parents, caregivers, and all who support individuals with special needs are encouraged to come to this workshop and support group. The support group follows the presentation.
Light refreshments will be served and parent support group will follow after the presentation.
New members are always welcome to join Parents for Parents. Meetings are free. Assistance with child care and transportation is available, but anyone needing those services must contact TRC in advance so that we can make the necessary preparations.
